What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning has gained new found popularity recently.  Its not that its a new technique, but sometimes a need comes up and the classic solution is the best.

Let's cover what dermaplaning is, how you benefit from the procedure, does it hurt or cause damage to dark skin, how often it needs to be done, who can and can't have it.

What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is the use of a specialized scalpel to exfoliate the skin.  It makes the skin exceptionally smooth because not only does it remove dead skin cells, it also removes "peach fuzz".

Benefits of dermaplaning facials

Because dermaplaning is such a complete exfoliation, it has particular benefits;

  • Look better in pictures - makeup goes on much smoother, less cake-y.
  • Skin is softer to touch and smoother than even microdermabrasion.
  • Skin benefits from improved absorption of topical active ingredients.
  • Spots and marks start to fade since the tp layer of skin has been removed.
  • Acne scars look less deep.

Does dermaplaning hurt?

Dermaplaning is a gentle, painless procedure, and when done by a certified and skilled esthetician, is safe and beneficial.  Oddly enough, many of my clients fall asleep despite my having a blade on their skin.  This is because I use gentle gliding strokes that are fairly repetitive.

The blade used is not your average drugstore razor - its a specially designed scalpel made of stainless and carbon steels blended to prevent dulling which can cause cuts.  The blade is held at a particular angle so the skin is exfoliated not scraped.  I prepare the skin in a special way, so it is clean and the tool easily glides over your skin.

Does dermaplaning cause pigment problems in dark skins?

Dermaplaning is great for darker skins.  Since these skins have more pigment and therefore a greater tendency to hyper-pigment with peels and microdemabrasion, dermaplaning is a good choice because it is gentle.  I don't use any chemicals or alcohol which sensitize the skin.

How often does dermaplaning need to be done?

I recommend dermaplaning be done every 3-4 weeks along with your regular facial.

Can I have a dermaplaning facial?

Most women can have a dermaplaning facial.  Men can, too, but it can only be done above the beard line.  Dermaplaning is safe for sensitive skins, rosacea, thin skin, and pregnant women.

Dermaplaning is not indicated for clients who are on Accutane, are undergoing cancer treatments, have uncontrolled diabetes, are on blood thinners, high doses of aspirin or otherwise have problems with blood clotting.  Those who are highly anxious, currently have a cough or cold (no sudden movements, please) should avoid dermaplaning.  If you have had Botox, fillers, laser resurfacing, or other cosmetic procedures, or if using topicals like Retin A, you'll need to wait.  Consult your esthetician for timeframes which will be based on your specific conditions.
