LED Facials for Anti-aging: One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind

OK, so you think I’m being dramatic?

Let's see what NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration has to say about LED Light and its effects on skin and how this applies to anti-aging skin care.

NASA studies

Many studies about LED Light and injured tissue were conducted by Dr. Harry Whelan at NASA, who found;

  • growth increased between 155% and 171% in normal human epithelial cells
  • wound size decreased by 36%
  • improvement of greater than 40% in musculoskeletal injuries of Navy SEAL members

To understand Dr. Whelan’s findings, you need to understand that your body, including your skin, needs cellular energy to perform the functions of creation, growth, healing, movement, etc.  Your skin regularly renews and repairs itself by growing various types of new tissue and removing damaged tissue.

Your skin requires cellular energy to perform these activities.

As we age, we produce far less cellular energy.  A 60 year old only produces about half the cellular fuel, known as ATP, of a younger person.  You might hear an older person say feel like they’re “running out of energy”.  They really are!

Light and ATP Creation

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is a molecule that stores energy and carries it to the cells so that cells carry out their diverse functions.  Some of these functions include muscle contraction, transport of nutrients, elimination of cell wastes, processing inflammatory responses, repairing tissues, conducting nerve impulses.  Notice how these functions relate to your skin?

ATP is used up when we need it, but it isn’t stored, so the body needs to make it when called upon.  Light energy is needed to start the process creating ATP.

Cell mitochondria are responsible for making ATP.  Unfortunately, mitochondria get old, too, and cannot do their jobs like when we (and they) were younger.

What is LED?

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode, a semiconductor that converts electrical energy into light energy released in the form of photons.

Photons are light energy.  They can be absorbed by chromophores (light absorbing molecules) in the body’s cells to be used cellular fuel.

LED is less than half the strength of lowest level laser, is non-invasive and non-ablative, which makes it gentle and non-damaging while providing the necessary energy to your cells.  LED uses multiple frequencies to prevent desensitizing.  There is no downtime after an LED treatment.  Despite the bright light, most clients fall asleep.

Anti-aging benefits range from a mild firming and calming of skin after one treatment, to noticeable thickening of the skin after several treatments done fairly close together.

Talk to me about LED treatments that can be added to one facial or performed in a corrective series.
