Dermaplaning in Brooklyn NYC

Dermaplaning facials at Calm Beauty Brooklyn provide that smooth, silky skin you desire.

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is used in a facial as a safe, gentle method of exfoliation. It is performed by a highly trained esthetician who use a professional-grade blade to gently remove dead skin cells on your face and neck.  It not only makes the skin brighter, lightens acne scars and helps active ingredients penetrate more effectively - it leaves amazingly smooth skin because it also removes peach fuzz.

Its a favorite of models, actresses and makeup artists who need to avoid cake-y makeup applications that will show poorly under harsh lights and high definition cameras (attention brides, this can be your issue, too).

Calm Beauty's unique approach to dermaplaning

Calm Beauty Brooklyn doesn't use alcohol or acetone (nail polish remover) or hydrogen peroxide to prepare your skin for dermaplaning.  That increases the chances of dryness, irritation, dermatitis or nicks.

Your skin will be prepared with a special hydrating lubricant so the blade glides easily on even the most dehydrated, sensitive or reactive skins.

The choice of blade is also crucial.  This is not a drugstore razor, but a tool that was designed specifically for dermaplaning by cosmetic surgeons.  It is also known as the "butter blade" because of its rounded shape which allows easy navigation of contours - the sides of the nose, around the mouth and tops of eyebrows.

Benefits

  • smoother application of foundation
  • better penetration of active ingredients (like in your serums)
  • prepares skin for more intensive treatments like peels

Does dermaplaning include extractions?

Dermaplaning can be added on to your facial and extractions are your choice. Extractions are not done during a dermaplane stand alone session.

Who can have a dermaplaning facial?

Almost anyone, but it's especially useful for people who are too sensitive for most exfoliation.  Dermaplaning is also great for pregnant and nursing women who are precluded from having traditional exfoliation such as microdermabrasion and peels.

If you have acne, we'll need to avoid those areas or wait until your breakouts subside.  If you are prone to sudden movements (such as coughing or more serious conditions such as seizure disorders), this is not a good option for you.

If you have coarse facial hair, dermaplaning is NOT indicated.  You'll have a choice of facial hair removal at your dermaplaning treatment, but the area will not be touched by the blade during the same session.  Coarse hair dulls the blade making it more apt to nick your skin.  Waxing, sugaring, threading or other methods should be used for coarse hair.  Dermaplaning will successfully remove vellus hair, also know as peach fuzz.

Before Dermaplaning, avoid exfoliating of any kind including hair removal, scrubs, peels, microderm, laser, acne medications, topical medications, etc.  Dermaplaning will have to wait if you've had Botox, fillers, microblading, etc.  In general, anything you've done to your skin you may want to check with me first.

How often should I be dermaplaned?

Most women prefer to have it monthly because skin looks better with regular care, professional level exfoliation.  Dermaplaning will NOT make your hair grow thicker, darker, faster or coarser.  Your hormones determine those factors, and no amount of shaving, plucking, waxing, sugaring or dermaplaning will change your hormones.

Dermaplaning can be added to facials or used as a stand alone treatment; it can be done with peels or microdermabrasion for more intense treatment.  However, my preferred method includes an application of active ingredients and hydrators since the skin is now incredibly ready to accept these ingredients.  I'll consult with you regarding the best method for your skin care concerns.
